How to Prepare for the HSPT®

Step 1: Take an HSPT Practice Test

The first step in preparing for the HSPT is to see if you need to prepare at all! By taking an HSPT practice test, you will see how well you do, and what areas you need to work in. One great thing about our HSPT Diagnostic Assessment is the printable score sheet that will show you the approximate percentile you would score on the HSPT. The score sheet also gives you a detailed question category breakdown for each subtest, so you know exactly which problem types you need to work on.

Step 2: Set a Goal and Write it Down

There is something magical about writing out a goal. What percentile do you want to score on the HSPT? Do want to score a 99th percentile? Do you want to score in the 90th percentile? Would you be satisfied with a score in the 80th percentile? Whatever percentile you desire to score, write it down and keep it visible when you are preparing! This is an underrated step, but having a goal for the HSPT will keep you motivated and focused.

Step 3: Find Quality Study Material

Not all study material is created equal. Some test prep companies and books have much better practice problems than others. We have seen plenty of “free” practice problems and tests that are nothing like the actual HSPT. Having good study material will be of utmost importance in preparing for the HSPT. With over 25 years of experience preparing students for HSPT, Saso’s test-prep material is among the best and most accurate for preparing for the HSPT.

Step 4: Create a Study Plan

By failing to plan, you are planning to fail! If you take an HSPT prep class, then your study plan will be taken care of for you. If you are going the self-study route, you need to consider what studying you need to do to improve in your weakest areas. One nice thing about our Ultimate HSPT Self-Study Course is that we have a 20-Day study plan to help students with this planning.

Step 5: Learn, Practice, Repeat

To improve at anything, we must practice, practice, practice. Read or watch lessons on problem solving strategies and methods. Then do plenty of practice problems, both untimed and timed. Because the HSPT is a timed test, practicing your pacing will be crucial. For any problems you miss, be sure to understand why you missed them so you can learn from your mistakes. Saso’s live online HSPT prep course and HSPT self-study course give students ample opportunity for this type of intense practice. Also, be sure to study plenty of vocabulary words. Vocabulary is a huge part of the HSPT. Students can study vocabulary for FREE with our online HSPT Vocabulary Flashcards

Step 6: Take a Final HSPT Practice Test

A week or two before your actual HSPT, be sure to take a final HSPT practice test. Our HSPT Mock Exam makes for the perfect final practice test. This will get you in the right mindset for your HSPT exam. By knowing what to expect on test day, you will feel more confident and relaxed!
